police criticized for Facebook posting
April
18, 2012 (REEDSBURG, Wis.) -- The police department in a small southern
Wisconsin city is being criticized for posting mug shots of suspects on its
Facebook page before they've been found guilty of an offense.
Police Chief Tim
Becker says he's using the department's Facebook page to inform the public and
remain transparent. But, Alderman Robert Parkhurst tells WISC-TV nobody
should be condemned before they have their day in court. Parkhurst says he was
on the page himself after being cited for filing a false complaint of police
misconduct. The case remains open.
Critics say the
public comments about the mug shots are offensive. Becker says he appreciates
the interaction with the public through use of the website.
Had enough? Write to the Speaker of the House, U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, DC 20515 and demand federal
hearings into the police problem in America.
Demand mandatory body cameras for cops, one strike rule on abuse, and a
permanent DOJ office on Police
Misconduct.
